Deliberate Thinking,
Honest Work
abeerdeenl was built on the conviction that good strategy is the product of careful thinking and direct conversation — not templates or frameworks imposed from the outside.
← Back to HomeHow We Came to Be
abeerdeenl was founded in Mong Kok in 2010 by a small team of senior consultants who had spent years inside large professional services firms — and grown frustrated with the gap between advice given and value delivered. The name draws on Hong Kong's working harbour tradition: direct, purposeful, and tied to the city's commercial character.
In the years since, we've worked with listed companies, family businesses, statutory bodies, and regional subsidiaries navigating change. The scope has changed; the approach has not. We spend more time listening than advising, and we don't propose work we don't think is warranted.
Our focus remains on three areas where we have accumulated genuine depth: business model thinking, regulatory navigation, and facilities strategy. We've chosen not to expand beyond these, because depth matters more to us than scale.
Our Mission
To help Hong Kong organisations think more clearly about complex problems, and to support them in taking considered, practical action — without the noise that too often surrounds professional advice.
Our Vision
A consulting practice known not for its size or its roster, but for the quality of its thinking and the integrity of its relationships — over the long term.
How We Work
These aren't aspirational statements — they describe choices we make repeatedly about how engagements are structured and conducted.
Listen First
We don't arrive with a predetermined solution. Every engagement starts with close attention to what's actually happening — not what we expect to find.
Write It Down
Verbal recommendations fade quickly. We produce written deliverables that teams can refer back to, challenge, and act from with confidence.
Stay Honest
We tell clients when we think something is a bad idea, when the scope is beyond our expertise, or when the timing isn't right. That's the deal.
Stay in Scope
Scope creep serves the consultant, not the client. We define the work precisely, deliver within it, and raise change requests transparently if the scope shifts.
Protect Privacy
Client information stays with us. We sign NDAs before receiving sensitive materials and apply strict information handling throughout every project.
Track Outcomes
We define success criteria at the outset and follow up with clients to understand whether the work held up in practice — and what might have been better.
The Team
Small by design. Each member brings sector-specific depth that translates directly into the quality of our work.
Marcus Tang
Managing Principal
Marcus brings 18 years across corporate strategy and operational restructuring, with particular focus on family-owned enterprises navigating succession and growth.
Serena Cheung
Regulatory Affairs Lead
Serena spent a decade with the HKMA and SFC before moving to advisory. She holds a master's in law and specialises in translating regulatory change into organisational action.
David Lam
Facilities Strategy Director
David leads our facilities work, drawing on 14 years managing and optimising real estate portfolios across commercial, retail, and institutional settings in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta.
Professional Standards
The protocols and commitments that underpin every engagement.
Certified Practice
Members hold chartered credentials from the Hong Kong Institute of Business Administration and the Institute of Management Consultants.
Data Protection
We comply with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) and apply data minimisation throughout all engagements.
Quality Review
Every client deliverable undergoes peer review before issue. No single consultant signs off their own work.
Clear Agreements
All engagements are governed by a written terms of engagement document, agreed before any substantive work begins.
Strategic Consulting Depth in Hong Kong
abeerdeenl operates in a city that rewards precision. Hong Kong's commercial environment — dense, competitive, regulatory-aware — demands consulting that understands local context. Our work doesn't arrive pre-packaged from another geography; it's conceived and delivered here, by practitioners who have spent careers in the HK market.
Business model thinking at abeerdeenl is about working through assumptions, not generating slides. We facilitate conversations that surface what organisations actually believe about their market position and what the evidence supports — often two different things. The deliverables we produce reflect that honest process.
Regulatory advisory in Hong Kong requires staying close to the SFC, HKMA, and the various sector-specific bodies whose guidance shapes organisational obligations. Our regulatory team tracks these changes continuously, which means client roadmaps reflect current and anticipated positions — not static snapshots.
Facilities management is often treated as a cost centre to be minimised. We treat it as a strategic question: how does the physical environment support the way people work, and is that still aligned with what the organisation needs? The answer shapes our recommendations more than any benchmark figure.
